Barrel Jeans: A Trend That Actually Works (And Why They’re Here to Stay)

Are barrel jeans in style? If you look at the magazines, the answer is a resounding yes. But if you’ve been around here for a while, you know that my wardrobe philosophy isn't about chasing fleeting trends—it’s about finding those pieces that just work.

When I find a silhouette that offers both comfort and confidence, I’m not interested in whether it’s "in" or "out." I’m interested in whether it makes getting dressed in the morning easy. And that is exactly why the barrel jean has earned a permanent spot in my closet.

The Petite Win: No Tailor Needed

For those of us on the petite side, denim shopping is usually a headache. We are constantly battling extra inseam length and the inevitable trip to the tailor.

At 5'1", the barrel jean is a total game-changer. I can wear them as-is. The regular length from Free People hits exactly where it needs to, meaning I can skip the hemming and get straight to styling. It is such a relief to find a cut that doesn't overwhelm a smaller frame but still provides that structural, fashion-forward shape.

The Fit & Quality

When it comes to denim, quality is non-negotiable. I keep coming back to Free People because the denim quality is simply the best. They hold their shape, they wear well, and they don’t feel like "fast fashion."

Here is the breakdown for getting the perfect fit:

  • The Basics: They generally run True to Size (TTS) and sit comfortably right on my belly.

  • The "Slouchy" Look: If you are chasing that effortless, laid-back vibe, I highly recommend sizing up. It gives you a little more room to move and adds that extra bit of "cool" factor to the silhouette.

I have jeans ranging from size 27 to 32 and overalls from small to extra-large

(And a quick side note: if you love the jeans, you have to try the overalls. They are, without a doubt, the best pair I’ve ever owned.)

How to Style Them

The best part about this cut is how well it pairs with my favorite wardrobe staple: Boots. Whether you’re rocking leather Western boots or something a bit more rugged, the barrel jean frames them perfectly. My favorite trick for nailing that carefree, Boho-Western vibe? Roll the cuff. It adds a little bit of intentional edge to the hem and shows off the boot detail. It’s effortless, it’s comfortable, and it feels like "me."

At the end of the day, style is about what makes you feel great in your own skin. If you’ve been on the fence about the barrel jean, consider this your sign to try a pair. It’s a trend that happens to be incredibly practical—and for me, that’s the best kind of fashion.

How are you styling your barrel jeans this week? Let me know in the comments!

P.S. Don't forget—my first vintage lace skirt collection, The Skirt Drop, is happening next Sunday, May 10. I can't wait to see which one you choose!
