The Art of the Hunt: Styling a Boho-Western Brunch with Vintage Soul

They say you eat with your eyes first, but I believe the true flavor of a celebration comes from the intention you pour into it. For my recent birthday brunch at Sandpino’s, I didn't want a "rented" look. I wanted a table that felt like a story—a curated collection of treasures gathered over time.
My home and my heart lean into a Boho-Western aesthetic: earthy, grounded, and rich with history. Achieving this look isn't about clicking "add to cart" on a big-box site; it’s about the thrill of the hunt. It’s about estate sales, early mornings at the flea market, and those lucky thrift store finds that just speak to you.
Here is how I styled a birthday brunch using nothing but vintage soul.
1. Curating the Foundation
The anchor of this tablescape was a beautiful macramé piece I’ve cherished for years. When I style an event, I look for textiles that have weight—not just physically, but visually. By sourcing these items from small businesses and second-hand markets, you aren't just decorating a table; you’re giving a second life to something that’s already lived a thousand other celebrations.
2. Low Profiles for Better Conversation
The most important rule in my hosting handbook? Keep your centerpiece low. I never want my guests to have to lean, duck, or dodge around a towering floral arrangement just to make eye contact. By keeping the decor grounded, the conversation flows as freely as the coffee. The goal is connection, and nothing should get in the way of that.
We established a new rule at this table, too: you don’t have to wait for everyone to get their food to start digging in—just eat, drink, and enjoy! The goal is connection, and when the company is this good, the food is meant to be savored the moment it hits the table.
3. The "Perfectly Imperfect" Napkin
For the place settings, I brought my own collection. I love a mix-and-match aesthetic rather than a perfectly uniform set—it feels so much more authentic. My favorite trick for that effortless, "undone" boho vibe is simple: I pinch the center of each napkin and let it drape naturally across the plate or to the side, rather than doing a formal, crisp fold. It’s casual, intimate, and lets the texture of the fabric really shine.
4. Vintage Lighting & Lived-in Vibes
To truly lean into the Boho-Western aesthetic, I skipped the fresh, tall tapers in favor of candles that have already been burnt down. There is something about the way the wax settles and the lower height of the candles that makes a space feel instantly "lived-in" and welcoming. It makes the table feel like a home, not a stuffy venue. Pair these with antique brass candelabras, and you have that perfect, moody, vintage glow.

5. Why Vintage Matters
Beyond the visual impact, there is a deep satisfaction in knowing that the items on my table didn't come from a warehouse. They came from someone’s home, a past market, or a hidden shelf in a local thrift shop. Every piece has a history. Using vintage goods for a milestone birthday—like kicking off my 48th year—feels like bringing the best of the past into the promise of the future.
The best part? The total cost for this entire setting—the centerpiece, the ambiance, the whole look—was just $19 for the fresh roses and eucalyptus. That is the beauty of sourcing vintage and holding onto pieces that continue to tell their story in different chapters. Everything else was already in my collection, waiting for another moment to shine.

The Bottom Line: You don’t need a massive budget or a big-box store to create an elevated, stunning tablescape. You just need a discerning eye, a little patience on the weekend hunt, and a love for the pieces that have a story to tell.

As I head into my 48th year this week, I’m reminded that the best things in life aren’t things at all—they’re the memories we create around a table, the stories we share, and the people we hold dear. Here’s to aging with grace, gathering with intention, and celebrating every single moment in between. Thank you for being a part of my journey; I can’t wait to share what this next chapter has in store. See you on the other side of my birthday! ✨🪶🫶🩵🥂
