Why I’m Breaking Up with the Giants (And Where I’m Going Instead)

The Why: Beyond Convenience
We all know the "Smile" box is easy, but lately, that convenience has started to feel heavy. I’ve reached a point where I can’t ignore where the money goes. Between Amazon’s massive tax breaks while the rest of us play by the rules, and the fact that their digital infrastructure (AWS) is essentially the nervous system for the current administration's immigration enforcement, I’m out.
And it’s not just the online giants. When Target stores started being used as staging grounds for raids, it hit too close to home. Shopping shouldn't come at the cost of our neighbors' peace of mind. I’m choosing to stop making billionaires richer and start investing in brands that actually reflect my life.
The Wardrobe: Where the "Boho-Rock" Lives
Transitioning away from the big-box stores doesn't mean sacrificing the aesthetic. If anything, it’s made my style more intentional. Here is my current rotation for that effortless, free-spirited vibe:
The Mainstays: Free People & Anthropologie These remain my go-to for those flowy silhouettes and unique textures.
The Global Edge: ASOS & H&M When I need something specific or trend-forward, these are my bridges. While I’m mindful of the fast-fashion aspect, I focus on pieces I’ll wear for years rather than just a season.
The Philosophy: Quality Over Quantity
One of the biggest shifts I’ve made is moving away from the "cheap thrill" of fast fashion. We’ve all been there—buying a $15 shirt from a big-box store only to have it shrink, pill, or lose its shape after two washes. Not only is that a waste of money, but it’s a disaster for our planet.
By choosing quality over quantity, we’re keeping cheap, synthetic fabrics out of landfills. I’d much rather own one stunning Free People jacket that I’ll wear for ten years than five cheap cardigans that won't last through the winter.
Pro-Tips for the Conscious Shopper: I know, the price tags on quality brands can feel steep. But you don't have to pay full price to dress well. Here is my "Boho-Rock" playbook:
The FP Sale Section: Always check the sale tab first for those 40-60% off gems.
Search "Nuuly": Free People’s rental and resale platform is a goldmine for barely-worn pieces. Just type "Nuuly" into your search or check their thrift section.
The Poshmark Rule: Before hitting "buy" on a new item, search the name on Poshmark. Nine times out of ten, it’s there for less, and buying second-hand is the ultimate way to keep clothes in circulation.
The Footwear: Tecovas & Lane Boots
You can't do "Boho-Rock" without a serious pair of boots. Tecovas offers that incredible handcrafted quality, while Lane Boots brings that extra flair that makes a simple denim-and-tee outfit pop. These aren't just shoes; they are investments that get better with every mile.
The Household: Staples with Soul
You don’t need a Prime subscription to keep a house running. Here’s how I’ve shifted my "daily essentials" game:
Bulk with a Conscience: Costco Costco is the anti-Amazon. They are consistently rated higher for how they treat and pay their employees, and their membership model feels like a fair trade for the quality you get. Plus, it’s much easier to avoid impulse "junk" buying when you're shopping in bulk.
The Wellness Routine: Melaleuca For my household cleaners, vitamins, and supplements, I’ve switched to the Wellness Store (Melaleuca). I love that they focus on wholesome values, but from a practical standpoint, it’s a total win.
The Concentrated Difference: Most of their cleaners come in highly concentrated formulas. You aren't paying for a bottle that is 90% water; you're getting the "real stuff" and mixing it at home. This makes them significantly more cost-effective per use than the watered-down versions at Target, plus it's way better for the environment since we aren't shipping heavy plastic bottles of water across the country.
Want to make the switch? Because this store is by invitation only to keep it community-focused, you won’t find it in a typical search. If you’re interested in cleaning up your home and saving money on essentials, email me at hello@herewithali.com and I can help get you started with an invitation!
Final Thoughts: Voting with Every Dollar
At the end of the day, our bank statements are a reflection of our values. Deciding to step away from the convenience of Amazon and the familiarity of Target wasn't just about a political headline—it was about reclaiming my own influence.
I’ve realized that I’d rather wait a few extra days for a Poshmark find or spend a little more on a pair of Lane Boots that will last a lifetime than contribute to a system that doesn't respect the people or the planet. It’s about creating a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.
Whether you’re ready to make a total switch or just want to start by swapping out one household cleaner, I hope this helps you see that there’s a different way to shop. It’s slower, it’s more intentional, and honestly? It’s a whole lot more stylish.

P.S. If you’re curious about the wellness side of things, keep an eye out for my next post where I’ll be sharing the depth of the essential vitamins I’m taking (game changers!). In the meantime, I have a "Vitamins" highlight saved over on my Instagram that walks you through everything I’m using daily! 🌿✨
